Big Joe

Big Joe (born 1939) is a Japanese manga artist from Osaka, regarded as a pioneer of cooking and gourmet manga. After starting out in the rental-book manga market, he took the pen name Big Joe in 1968 and moved into shonen magazines, scoring successive hits with writer Gyu Jiro on Kugishi Sabuyan (1971) and Hochonin Ajihei (1973), the latter serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, where he also drew Pinboke Shata (1978) and Studio Help (1980). In 2026 he received the Minister of Education Award at the 55th Japan Cartoonists Association Awards.
